I’m Amy Boyack. I love singing and have taught music in the public schools until I took a different job to work at home and give me more time with my family. Now I’m “the interest exterminator” and I absolutely love it! It gives me so much flexibility that I’m able to be with my kids and my family and have more time to sing and perform as well. My sister and I just finished the summer season at the opera theater. We sang “Sisters” and had a great time. The audience is always so great there. It’s not really an opera show, it’s more of a melodrama and murder mystery with a dinner and a show. There were a few times when Kim couldn’t make it and I just did a solo of “There’s No Business Like Show Business”. That worked well and the audience was receptive as always.
We also sang at the Jazz and Blues Festival near Kim’s house. We opened the show and did three songs: “Sisters”, “A Tisket A Tasket”, and “Anything You Can Do”. The funny thing was that we had planned costume changes so that we wore the next costume underneath the first one. When we were done with the first song, we were going to take the outside blouse off, having the next shirt underneath for the next song’s costume. Then, we had pants under our skirts to change the costume further. After each song, we removed one thing to change the costume. However, there were no side wings on the stage. It was all out in the open. So the people watching the show thought we were doing a strip show! They were saying things like, “if we just keep them singing, they will run out of clothes.” We hadn’t thought of that. They wanted an encore, but we told them we were out of costumes. What a funny thing that we hadn’t even planned!
It’s so fun to have a sister that will sing with me, but when she can’t, it’s good to have a number ready that I can do solo. One thing that was always important was the costumes. When we sang sisters, we had matching skirts that were in the 50’s style and white blouses with sparkling belt buckles. The costume for “There’s No Business Like Show Business” was a black dress with gold metallic thread interweaved throughout it. It sparkled when the light shined on it just right. We found that one at the thrift store. But it wouldn’t have been complete without the wig Kim let me borrow and the earrings that I found with Dorothy (my voice teacher and terrific friend) when we found the dress.
The great thing is that now that I’m “The Interest Exterminator” and working with people to help them get out of debt, I have so much free time. The money is great, too. I’ve already gotten promoted twice and received two raises that went with that. United First Financial is the company that has made this all possible.
